Fig.4: Extraction socket is oval in shape (*).  The buccolingual dimension is longer than the mesiodistal one.  The buccal plate is defective underneath the fistula.  An implant should be placed as palatal as possible.  The bottom of the socket is oval in shape and also flat.  Therefore it is easy to establish osteotomy in the flat bony surface.  In contrast, it is much more difficult to establish osteotomy on the oblique palatal wall when the apex of the socket is narrow and pointed.
